Connect with Others Recovering from Religious Harm

From topical forums to a monthly book club to member-led group hangouts, this community has multiple opportunities to form authentic connections with others who “get it.”

A place to connect with others going through the same thing.

For many people, one of the most difficult aspects of leaving a high-control religion is losing their community and feeling really alone in processing their experiences.

And I get it… I’ve been there too.

Not only does leaving mean an actual loss of friendships and social supports, but many of us have struggled to find others who really understand what we’ve been through.

I created the Religious Harm Recovery Membership Community to help fill this gap.

It’s designed to be a supportive space where folks can meaningfully engage with one another around topics unique to recovering from religious indoctrination.

How to tell if this group would be right for you.

You would probably get a lot out of the Religious Harm Recovery Membership Group if you check the following boxes:

  • You were indoctrinated into a high-control religion like Evangelical Christianity, Jehovah’s Witness, LDS, SDA, IFB, or similar
  • You’ve been looking to connect with others more deeply around your experiences with religious harm
  • You want a space that’s professionally guided, inclusive, and affirming

Membership Includes:

A Thriving Community Forum

Moderated to ensure thoughtful communication, this space most closely resembles a private Facebook group without being connected to any social media platform.

Inside the community forum, members can create posts, share resources, and get support from one another.

Resource Library

Each week, a new edition of the Religious Harm Recovery Digest is posted to the resource library.

The RHR Digest is available in both written and audio format and covers a variety of topics related to religious trauma, purity culture, childhood indoctrination, and more!

Occasionally, other resources will be posted to the library such as recorded audio resources, journal prompts, and recovery guides.

Topical Forums

Topical forums are available for members who want to connect more deeply around specific topics. Currently these include:

  • Navigating complex family dynamics
  • Recovering from Purity Culture

These forums are actively guided and moderated to support meaningful discussion and deeper recovery.

Additional forums may be added as needed in response to member requests.

Coffee Chats

Coffee chats are virtual group hangouts that are centered around re-building community.

The goal is for folks to be able to actually meet and talk to one another in a space that supports meaningful connection.

As this community grows and evolves, the number of coffee chats will continue to increase since members will have the opportunity to advertise and host their own coffee chat events.

Monthly Book Club

  • A virtual book club that meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 7pm EST
  • Books are non-fiction and are related to mental health and/or religious trauma

Here are the book club picks for 2025:

  • October 7th: The Wisdom of Your Body by Hillary McBride
  • November 4th: Take Back Your Life by Janja Lalich
  • December 2nd: Break the Cycle by Mariel Buqué

Group Coaching Intensives

Go deeper by joining a group coaching intensive guided and facilitated by psychotherapist and religious harm recovery coach Megan Von Fricken, LCSW.

These 6-week intensives include weekly, 60-minute virtual calls that facilitate focussed processing around topics related to religious indoctrination:

Each session includes:

  • A live presentation of educational material
  • Thoughtfully facilitated group discussion
  • Guided practices for integration and healing that draw from Somatic Experiencing, IFS, and EMDR

In order to allow deeper connection among members, these intensives are cohort-based and are capped at 15 participants.

You do not have to be a member of the RHR Membership Community to join.

  • Non-member rate: $297 (payment plans are available)
  • Member-only rate: $197

The next coaching intensive is Overcoming Shame (dates to be announced soon). Use the button below to join the membership and receive exclusive rates for group coaching intensives.

Common Questions:

The biggest difference is the quality of engagement.

While many Facebook groups devolve into thoughtless commentary or shallow memes, the forums in this community are carefully moderated and thoughtfully curated to support more meaningful connection among members.

There are also many more ways to engage… from live member hangouts to book clubs to topical forums. This community is geared towards helping folks connect in meaningful ways.

This community is not therapy and isn’t meant to replace therapy. That said, it offers more than a peer-led support group because it’s actively moderated and guided by me.

I bring my training and experience as both a psychotherapist and religious harm recovery coach into how I facilitate discussions, set boundaries, and create a safe environment. My approach is trauma-informed, and I prioritize emotional safety so members can connect and share openly without fear of judgment or harm.

In order to maintain as much safety as possible, each person must complete a brief screening process and agree to the membership rules before being given access to the membership.

For this reason, it’s not possible to look around inside before joining.

However, if you join and you decide it’s not for you, you will receive a full refund if you cancel within 7 days of accessing the membership community. All you need to do to cancel is send me a direct message inside the community within 7 days.

Current Membership Rates

There is no long-term commitment required to join. You may cancel at anytime.
